The function of the anaesthetist is an essential part of delivering a good quality of health care to affected individuals. Ged Furlong whilst being employed as an anaesthetist was in charge of a wide range of responsibilities for the people that he looked after. The duties that the anaesthetist Gerard Furlong performed included the pre-operative examination of patients, meeting with the surgeon performing the procedure, development of an individual anaesthesia program and also post-operative treatment and management of patients. As anaesthetists are perioperative medical doctors it gives them the chance to work in several areas of practice within the field of medical care. During his time working for the National Health Service the anaesthetist Gerard Furlong spent time in obstetrics, working in the intensive care unit at Coventry and Warwick hospital as well as quite a few years on the Trauma elective ward in Dunganon hospital. During his career Doctor Furlong came to enjoy his work in the obstetrics ward the most soon after recognising he had a special skill for administering epidurals to women at the business end of pregnancy. Ged Furlong is a member of a number of medical-related societies. Membership of these societies makes it possible for him to stay abreast of the newest improvements and breakthroughs in the field of anaesthesia as well as contribute articles to their periodicals. His specialist knowledge has been used in several research assignments most notably on the HL7 CDA execution guide for SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia). Outside the world of medicine Ged has a number of passions including travel, sailing and he has recently taken up the game of golf though as yet he’s still looking for the perfect swing.
